Does Hoodia Have Any Side Effects?
Hoodia has been touted as the weight loss discovery of the century, when in fact the Hoodia gordonii plant has been around for centuries, and was taken regulary by the Sans Bushmen to control their hunger during long hunting trips. The media covered the discovery of Hoodia extensively and it was featured on the TV news programs 60 Minutes and 20/20. Oprah featured it in her "O" magazine and created even more hype over this weight loss discovery. Everyone looking for a "magic pill" to help lose weight were excited about the discovery.
But does it have any side effects? This is quite an important factor to consider when looking at various ways to help you lose weight.
It is said that the extract from the Hoodia plant has no side effects, and this was also the experience of Lesley Stahl, the reporter from 60 Minutes who went to the desert and tasted this product, she reports she had no side effects. She claimed to not have an aftertaste and it didn't cause her heart to race. She went on to claim she was not hungry the rest of the day even when she would normally feel hunger pangs at a mealtime.
The Sans Bushmen have little problem with side effects and they have been consuming the Hoodia gordonii plant for thousands of years. Does this mean the plant and its extract is safe? It appears safe. After all, the Bushmen have been using it for hunger and thirst control for thousands of years.
As always though if you are taking medication, or are in any doubt as to your own suitability, then see your physician first before taking Hoodia.
